The American Association for Equine Assisted Activities (AAEAA) is a non-profit (pending) organization designed to give guidance and certification to facilities and instructors who work with children and adults in equine assisted activities. The organization was started in 2010 due to a need for a certification process for those who work with people who are not handicapped, but still use the horse in an equine assisted activity. There are currently four levels of certification, and each builds upon the previous. The first level is for leaders, side walkers, and basic volunteers in any equine assisted therapy facility. The second is for instructors of basic equine assisted activities; including halter, showmanship, and basic riding. The third is for more advanced instruction, including those who wish to compete in regular equestrian activities, including competitive trail events, horse shows, parades, and clinics. The fourth is for instructors of carriage driving programs. Finally, there is a separate certification for facilities themselves.
